Cultural Streamign Series
Zlock Performing Arts Center

Take in recorded performances of leading classical and jazz artists, ensembles, and orchestras from around the world in the comfort of the Zlock Performing Arts Center. Free and Open to Public

The bold and ferocious harmonic imagination of John Coltrane is laid bare in this concert, captured at the Comblain-La-Tour Festival in Belgium, 1965. Alongside his famed quartet, he delivers a transcendent performance that is marked by the total physicality of the music four sets of hands moving with restless vigour as vapour literally rises from their shoulders and into the night sky.

This is the final footage we have of the quartet in this formation, featuring McCoy Tyner on piano, Elvin Jones on drums and Jimmy Garrison on bass. Together, they deliver Naima, a piece from Coltranes seminal Giant Steps, Crescent, released just the year before with the same musicians and My Favorite Things, a crowd-pleaser and a standard, one that demonstrates the bandleaders exuberant use of the soprano sax, an instrument introduced to him by Miles Davis just before the tracks official recording.

Free and Open to Public. 38 min

John Coltrane Bandleader, Tenor saxophone, Soprano saxophone
Elvin Jones Drums
Jimmy Garrison Double bass

The 1926 Centennial Titans of Jazz: Miles Davis Quintet in Juan-les-Pins

Oct. 1, 2026, 12:15 p.m. - Oct. 1, 2026, 1:01 p.m.

Take in recorded performances of leading classical and jazz artists, ensembles, and orchestras from around the world in the comfort of the Zlock Performing Arts Center. Free and Open to Public

This remarkable performance at the 1969 Juan-les-Pins Festival sees Miles at one of the many moments of renewal in his staggering career. A year before this concert the jazz critic Leonard Feather visited Miles' New York apartment and found that he was listening to a broad spectrum of music: Aretha Franklin, The Byrds, James Brown and Jimi Hendrix. His tastes were changing and the whole of jazz was about to adapt with him as he rolled out what is now known as his Electric Period.

Much like Picasso, the shifts in Miles Davis work have been considered mini-epochs by posterity, and this one saw him connect with a number of musicians Wayne Shorter, Dave Holland and Chick Corea (who all recorded on the seminal In A Silent Way, which was recorded the same year as this performance) and the sublime drummer-composer Jack DeJohnette (who recorded on 1970s equally seminal Bitches Brew). Jazz hasn't known many more impressive line-ups than the one on that summer stage on the French Riviera.

The 1926 Centennial Titans of Jazz: Miles Davis - Birth of The Cool

Nov. 5, 2026, 12:15 p.m. - Nov. 5, 2026, 1:15 p.m.

Miles Davis: Horn player, bandleader, innovator. Elegant, intellectual, vain. Callous, conflicted, controversial. Magnificent, mercurial. Genius. The very embodiment of cool. The man with a sound so beautiful it could break your heart. The central theme of Miles Davis's life was his restless determination to break boundaries and live life on his own terms. It made him a star-it also made him incredibly difficult to live with, for the people who loved him most. Again and again, in music and in life, Miles broke with convention-and when he thought his work came to represent a new convention, he changed it again. Miles's bold disregard for tradition, his clarity of vision, his relentless drive, and constant thirst for new experiences made him an inspiring collaborator to fellow musicians and a cultural icon to generations of listeners. It made him an innovator in music-from bebop to "cool jazz," modern quintets, orchestral music, jazz fusion, rock 'n' roll, and even hip-hop. Featuring never-before-seen archival footage, studio outtakes, and rare photos, Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool tells the story of a truly singular talent and unpacks the music and the myth of the man behind the horn.

What is Bucks+?

Distinguished Program badgeBucks+ is a co-curricular engagement program designed to help you find and participate in activities happening virtually, on-campus, throughout Bucks County, and beyond! Students earn points for activities, event attendance, and accomplishments at varying levels. The program focuses on competency areas employers are looking for: Community Engagement, Financial Literacy, Global Awareness, Personal/Professional Development and Bucks Pride. Students track their progress and share their accolades with peers, advisors, and employers using Suitable, an impact measurement tool for academic institutions.

Why Bucks+?

Bucks+ was originally adopted by the Business + Innovation Department and is modeled after Temple University’s recently developed Fox Leadership Development Program (FLDP). Suitable will transfer the applicable points from our Suitable system to Temple's when students transfer. For Business Administration students, it's 500 points and for all others it will be the points earned within the Career Starter badge that will transfer. This program is employed by Temple's Business School. Students earn points by attending or participating in extra-curricular/co-curricular events.

Bucks Pride

Bucks Pride is all about fun and social interaction. Find opportunities that enable you to make connections with fellow students, student organizations, student leaders, and the Bucks County Community College staff. Explore your interests, learn a new skill, or just blow off a little steam after your classes.

Personal and Professional Development

Personal development means growing in areas that will help you to be your best self. This means learning physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, financial, career and relationship skills that will serve you your entire life. Professional development means growing different areas of yourself that will help you be a better employee. What will help you in your personal growth will certainly also carry over to your professional life.

Financial Literacy

Financial literacy opportunities give you the chance to gain an understanding of various financial areas including topics related to managing personal finance, money, borrowing, and investing.

Global and Cultural Awareness

Global and Cultural Awareness opportunities will help you develop the ability to understand, respect and work well with people from diverse cultures in our interconnected world. The idea behind global awareness is to create global citizens who are open to those raised in different countries, cultures and religious settings.

Community Engagement

Community Engagement opportunities encourage students to engage with community and civic society. Working in collaboration with community organizations enables development of the ability to work well with others, and build transferable skills such as leadership and communication. These are real opportunities to test knowledge, skills, and attributes, including problem-solving, creativity, and critical thinking.

Not transferring? Employers look not only for academic excellence but also initiative. A 2016 survey conducted by the National Association of Colleges and Employers showed that being involved in extracurricular activities had more influence on hiring decisions than a student's GPA. Research by Gallup also shows that students involved in extracurricular activities are 60% more likely to feel prepared for life after college. Participating in Bucks+ will showcase your dedication to the continued development of skills in the four competency areas. Earn a digital badge in Leadership and/or Community Engagement and display them on your Linked In profile for even more benefit!
