Planting Seeds
Planting Seeds: The Art & Science of Pollination was inspired by a meadow restoration project currently underway in Tyler State Park involving faculty and students from the Department of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) at Bucks County Community College. The Artmobile exhibition, curated by Liz Sheehan, tracks the progress of this long-term project through photography and other documentary means, and features 14 artists and scientists from across the nation who work to increase awareness of pollinators in our environment.
Geared toward a K-12 audience, Planting Seeds is based on STEAM principles, which prove that Art & Design can drive innovation in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, and that interdisciplinary approaches are necessary to solve our most pressing environmental problems. With a wide range of methods and media, including artists who partner with scientists or conduct research as part of their studio practice, Planting Seeds introduces students to how and why they come together to solve problems and to communicate information. Video, digital, and other time-based media reveal patterns in pollinator movement, make visible the mechanics of pollination, and examine the behavior of different species. Botanical illustrators create drawings at the service of science, using technical accuracy and observational skill to communicate both fact and form. Microphotography reveals how bee and butterfly anatomy traps and carries pollen. Infographics distill and convey information, while data visualizations translate complex amounts of research. Other artists employ pattern and poetry to convey the functional beauty of pollinators and plants.
As always, Planting Seeds includes hands-on displays that reinforce the concepts presented by our on-board Educator. Teacher Manuals, educational resources and in-service training support the integration of the Artmobile experience into school curricula.
During our two-year tour of Planting Seeds, Artmobile will welcome more than 35,000 visitors of all ages at 70 schools and a dozen public sites in Bucks County.
