A Departmental approved textbook is required.

Presentation aids regarding weapons, animals, drugs and alcohol must be in accordance with campus regulations.

This course meets the General Education requirement for Oral Communication.
This course meets the General Education requirement for Information Literacy.

COMM110H is part of the Honors@Bucks program. Honors@Bucks challenges high-ability, intellectually curious students through coursework emphasizing scholarly research, high-order critical thinking, and experiential learning.

Students cannot register for honors coursework until they have applied to and been accepted by the Honors@Bucks program.

Honors@Bucks is open to students in all associate-degree programs who meet Honors@Bucks' criteria.

VI. Catalog Course Description
This course helps students build confidence in preparing and delivering informative and persuasive speeches. Topics include subject selection, audience analysis, research, organization, and use of voice and body in speech delivery.
VII. Required Course Content and Direction
  1. Course Learning Goals

    Students will:

    1. apply models of the communication process to public speaking;
    2. demonstrate an understanding of the speaker and listener ethical responsibilities;
    3. prepare and deliver various types of speeches [Oral Communication];
    4. research speech topics and develop and support their ideas [Information Literacy]; and
    5. evaluate the effectiveness of self and peer's speeches [Oral Communication].
  2. Planned Sequence of Topics and/or Learning Activities

    1. students deliver a minimum of three (3) speeches in front of a live audience in a classroom or professional setting during the term of the course.
    2. students deliver the following types of speeches: one (1) speech must be informative, one (1) speech must be persuasive (speech assignment and rubric are on file in Arts Department office); these speeches must include research, a delivery outline of the speech, and citation of sources or use of a bibliography. Students may be required to deliver other types of speeches at the discretion of the instructor
    3. students’ informative and persuasive speeches are required to be a minimum of eight (8) minutes in length
    4. students effectively use communication technology in a minimum of one speech
    5. students may be required to deliver additional speeches at the discretion of the instructor
  3. Assessment Methods for Course Learning Goals

    Students satisfy the course learning goals via tests, written class exercises, papers, critical listening assignments, class participation and individual oral presentations.

    The artifacts produced include a presentation outline for one speech, a video recording of one speech, and a written assessment that requires research, ethics, evaluation, and citation of sources.

  4. Reference, Resource, or Learning Materials to be used by Student:

    1. Each instructor uses a departmentally-approved textbook.
    2. Each instructor must distribute a course syllabus on the first day of class.
    3. Students use traditional library materials and academic online resources.
    4. Students may be required to engage in supplemental reading and attendance at an outside speech.
