Philosophy

The Advisory Board of the Bucks County Community College Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning develops its programs in keeping with College's Vision and Mission statements and the annual Strategic Directions of the College.

College Vision

Bucks County Community College will be a center for innovative educational opportunities with a national reputation for learning earned by the success of our students and the integrity and skill of our faculty and staff.

College Mission

The Mission of Bucks County Community College is to provide to the County's diverse population of learners accessible, affordable, convenient, and comprehensive educational, training, and cultural opportunities that will equip them to be competent and effective in their work and as citizens of the world.

The Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning draws on the talents and abilities of the faculty and encourages their growth in order to help the College achieve its educational mission. To optimize the Center's success, it operates from an historical building in a prominent central location on the Newtown Campus. Thus, the Center has a clear institutional identity, and its location symbolizes the primary importance of teaching and learning in the mission of the College.

Goals of the Faculty Center

  1. Continually improve teaching and learning at Bucks County Community College
  2. Foster the professional growth of each faculty member
  3. Develop a sense of community among faculty

Organization

  1. Advisory Board
    1. The Advisory Board is composed of one representative from each of the seven academic departments and one from the Learning Resources Department. These members are recommended for appointment by their Assistant Academic Dean (or the Dean of Learning Resources, in the case of the Learning Resources representative). These recommendations are forwarded to the Provost & Vice-President of Academic Affairs, who makes the official appointment before the start of each academic year.

      Members of the Advisory Board serve for a one-year, renewable term without remuneration or release time. Their duties include:

      • Representing their respective departments in the operations and decision- making of the Advisory Board
      • Promoting the goals and programming of the Faculty Center to their respective departments
      • Guiding the process of gathering information on programming needs/interests from the faculty
    2. Faculty interested in participating as advisory board members may make that fact known to their Assistant Academic Dean by April 30. Incumbents may request to serve another term.
  2. Facilitator: Faculty Assistant for Development and Assessment reporting to the Executive Assistant to the Provost.
    1. The facilitator convenes the Advisory Board at least monthly during the academic year.
    2. The facilitator has the responsibility for the day to day running of the Faculty Center.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Advisory Board
    1. The Advisory Board meets monthly during the academic year.
    2. The Advisory Board has a facilitator: Faculty Assistant for Development and Assessment. The facilitator:
      1. sets meeting dates for the Advisory Board;
      2. establishes the agenda for Advisory Board meeting minutes;
      3. takes responsibility for Advisory Board meeting minutes; and
      4. serves as official correspondent of the Advisory Board.
    3. The Advisory Board annually reviews and recommends the budget proposal for the coming academic year which is then submitted to the Provost & Vice-President of Academic Affairs.
    4. The Advisory Board annually establishes the project and programming priorities of the Faculty Center.
    5. The Advisory Board periodically reviews its policies and procedures.
    6. The Advisory Board shapes its goals and procedures in tandem with the College's strategic directions.
    7. The Facilitator of the Advisory Board is responsible for seeing that the minutes for all Faculty Center's business meetings are kept and that copies of all minutes and Center's correspondence, by-laws etc. are updated and maintained including information on our website and social media presence.
  2. Facilitator
    1. The primary role of the Facilitator is to coordinate efforts toward achieving the goals and priorities of the Center.
    2. The basic responsibilities of the Facilitator are to carry out the policies and programs established by the Advisory Board, to include:
      1. programming (planning, advertising, implementing);
      2. establishing an environment in the Faculty Center conducive to interation among faculty; and
      3. working to assure that most effective application of resources available to and through the Faculty Center.
    3. The Facilitator ordinarily serves as a moderator for the Faculty Center website and social media presence.
    4. The Facilitator assists the Executive Assistant to the Provost in preparing the Center's budget proposal and is responsible for implementation of the approved budget.
