Meet Tom DeLorezno
In a career spanning 4 decades in NYC’s advertising market as a photographer, I found both influence and inspiration from countless sources. Standing out in my field finally came to me when I started to think outside the box. At that point I was about 15yrs in; I moved from commercial shooting in its traditional sense to a heavily influenced tenebristic editorial style and found myself achieving recognition and success with two parallel career line profiles. One in still life and the other in lifestyle people work. It was then I discovered where I truly belonged: shooting people. If I were to describe my work, I’d say “…I’m an illustrative lifestyle portrait photographer. I’ve made a career out of taking pictures of people standing around with their hands in their pockets…” And it’s 100% true, now shooting still life assignments covers less than 1% of my career.
Not long after that people-shooter profile broke through, I found myself shooting album jackets (remember CD’s?) more often than shooting magazine ad work, which was beauty, fashion and illustrative lifestyle assignments. Here, it quickly took shape that in working with respected musicians, I had been entrusted to encapsulate their outward personification as well as my own vision being rolled into one single image. It has given me great opportunity, great personal freedom of expression and great pleasure to be able to live my professional life within my personal life. Because of my commitment to shooting from the heart, many clients have become friends. Truly, I had elevated from shooting photographs to creating artwork; I finally met myself in this part of my career.
Perhaps unlike many, for me to pick one image that tells my whole story is an easy task. A picture of myself would be superfluous, as I have been in each and every one of my photographs from day one as a teenager with my first camera. This one truly speaks for me, as it encapsulates not only my 40yrs, but the 20yrs prior in discovery and education in this craft. It also represents my skill set, my passion, and a moment in time with the most influential person I have ever met, my Son, Maro DēLo, who’s long turned pro and is now a peer to many of my clients. Indeed, I have come full circle.
