The National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nursing (NCLEX-PN) is a standardized exam that each State Board of Nursing uses to determine a candidate’s preparation for entry-level practical nursing practice. Once a candidate successfully completes a board approved Practical Nursing Program, they may apply to sit for the NCLEX-PN to obtain licensure to practice as a LPN. There is a fee for the exam and a fee for the license.
As determined by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN), the NCLEX examination covers the following four ‘client needs’ categories:
- Safe, Effective Care Environment
- Health Promotion and Maintenance
- Psychological Integrity
- Physiological Integrity
The NCLEX is a multiple choice exam which uses Computerized Adaptive Testing (CAT) to determine competency in each category. LPN candidates will answer a minimum of 85 questions and a maximum of 205 questions. If the candidate is clearly above the passing standard, the candidate will pass the exam; likewise, if a candidate is clearly below the standard, the candidate will fail the exam. There is five (5) hours allotted to complete the exam, which includes an introductory tutorial and two 10-minute breaks.
