- This course is an overview of the American Historic Preservation movement from the 19th-century grass roots organizations through the 20th-century state, federal, and private institutions that guide the movement's work in the 21st century. Students learn how to apply best practices in the care of our cultural heritage.

Course Learning GoalsStudents will:
- demonstrate an understanding of the history of the preservation movement;
- identify historic character of the built environment;
- identify threats facing the preservation of the built environment;
- describe the role that federal agencies and state and local government have in historic preservation in the United States; and
- describe the role that native tribes and non-profits have in the care of our cultural heritage.

- introduction to historic preservation from its grass roots efforts through today
- examine the built environment through preservation practice
- recognize the role state and federal agencies have in preservation practice
- application of historic preservation practices in the care of our cultural heritage
