This course meets the General Education requirement for Critical Thinking.
VI. Catalog Course Description
This course satisfies the transfer requirements for Physical Education majors. It is designed to meet all American Red Cross requirements. Students will receive certification in lifeguarding, first aid, and other appropriate certifications. Basic concepts of exercise physiology and nutrition will be presented.
VII. Required Course Content and Direction
  1. Course Learning Goals

    The students will be able to:

    1. Explain lifeguarding surveillance and rescue techniques in case of drowning or water related accidents;
    2. Explain and implement the steps of an emergency action plan [Critical Thinking];
    3. Demonstrate the ability respond quickly and effectively to emergencies;
    4. Demonstrate skills required for first aid techniques, CPR, and AED [Critical Thinking]; and
    5. Explain and analyze current concepts of exercise physiology and nutrition and apply them to lead a healthy life. [Critical Thinking].

    1. Basic physiology of exercise
      1. Principles of warm-up, stretching and cool down
      2. Basic anatomy of muscles and joints
        1. Fiber type
        2. Ligament
        3. Tendon
      3. Muscular contractions: isotonic, isometric, and isokenetic
        1. Anaerobic
        2. Aerobic
    2. Applied physiology of exercise
      1. Principles of an exercise prescriptions
        1. Fiber type
        2. Ligament
        3. Tendon
      2. Physiological effects of regular anaerobic exercise
      3. Physiological effects of regular aerobic exercise
      4. Cross-training and how a variety of activities contribute to cardiovascular and total fitness
    3. The role of diet and nutrition - What is a quality diet?
      1. Weight management and body composition
      2. Cardiovascular disease and atherosclerosis
      3. Heat balance, fluid, and electrolyte consumption
      4. Role of the nutrients in energy metabolism
      5. Relationship among stress, diet and exercise

  3. Assessment Methods for Course Learning Goals

    Students will be assessed on the following:

    1. Writing assignments and oral presentations

    Core Specific:
    Essay explaining how students' plan to change some of their habits in order to live healthier lives by implementing the components of diet and exercise that they have studied in this class [Critical Thinking].
