This course meets a Personal Health Requirement in Category I: Essential Skills and Perspectives and the Category III requirements of the Core Curriculum at Bucks County Community College for Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving and Responsible Citizenship.
VI. Catalog Course Description
This course is designed to introduce the student to the fundamental philosophies, skills, techniques, and terms of Hatha Yoga. Emphasis is placed on how to correctly practice yoga and how to incorporate it into student daily habits. This course will also teach valid concepts of nutrition and exercise physiology.
VII. Required Course Content and Direction
  1. Course Learning Goals

    1. The student will learn that lifelong wellness is achieved and sustained by practicing habits that include regular physical exercise, proper nutrition, and integration of mental and spiritual states;
    2. This course will help the student to develop an understanding of the philosophies of Hatha Yoga. Other forms of yoga will not be addressed;
    3. This course will help the student to learn the postures (asanas) of Hatha Yoga and to familiarize the student with the specific terminology of yoga. Information will be provided to enable the student to evaluate the correctness of these postures and the processes of executing them. Asanas will be selected from the many beginning level asanas, and will build in a logical sequence;
    4. This course will help the student to learn correct yogic breathing techniques (pranayama), and the importance of the breath to the execution of yoga. Only beginning level pranyama will be taught;
    5. The student will learn valid concepts of nutrition and how to apply them to his/her own diet;
    6. This course will help the student learn a holistic view of himself/herself and to understand the interactions of diet, exercise meditation, breathing and relaxation, and their contributions to total wellness; and
    7. This course will address the benefits of physical, mental, and spiritual vigor and relaxation. It is hoped that the student will develop a heightened awareness of self-confidence.
  2. Planned Sequence of Topics and/or Learning Activities

    1. Classes in Hatha Yoga will consist of the following units
      1. Warm-up
      2. Teaching of new asanas
      3. Review and performance of learned asanas
      4. Teaching of new pranyana
      5. Review and performance of learned pranyana
      6. Instruction and practice of meditation for 1-5 minutes
      7. Guided relaxation
    2. Classes in nutrition will be taught between 4th and 8th weeks. The role of diet and nutrition -- what is a quality diet?
      1. Weight management and body composition
      2. Cardiovascular disease and atherosclerosis
      3. Heat balance, fluid and electrolyte consumption
      4. Role of nutrients in energy metabolism
      5. Relationship among stress, diet and exercise
    3. Applied Physiology of Exercise
      1. Principle of an exercise prescription
        1. Frequency, intensity, duration
        2. Overload, progressive resistance, specificity, recovery
      2. Physiological effects of regular anaerobic exercise
      3. Physiological effects of regular aerobic exercise
      4. Cross-training has a variety of activities contribute to cardiovascular and total fitness
    4. One full class in relaxation techniques will be taught during the semester so that they may use it as a reminder in their home practice
  3. Assessment Methods for Course Learning Goals

  4. Reference, Resource, or Learning Materials to be used by Student:

    1. Departmentally-selected textbook or handouts provided. Details provided by the instructor of each course section.
    2. Students will benefit from a summary of the asanas and pranayama taught during the semester so that they may use it as a reminder in their home practice.
