VII. Required Course Content and Direction
  1. Course Learning Goals

    1. This course is designed to help the student express her creativity through dance. The dancer's movement will be the medium and her imagination her choreographer. The student will be given the opportunity to experience their creativity by expressing their ideas and emotions through movement. They will learn to "dance" out their creativeness.

    2. This course will help the student develop physical strength, skill and precision in dance technique so that they have the confidence to create movement phrases and complete sequences.

    3. The student will explore the elements of dance movement: focus, dimension, direction, level, control and execution. She will learn proper body alignment and placement.

    4. The student will learn how to express ideas and emotions through movement. Dance will become the framework for the students to discover them and to communicate this discovery to others.

    5. This course will provide opportunities for the students to build their self-confidence by performing before the class and an outside audience. The course will enable the student to realize the joy of spirit that comes from moving the body with control, rhythm, and creativity.

    6. The student will learn valid concepts of exercise physiology and nutrition along with instruction of their application to personal dieting and modern dance.

    7. Performance Objectives:
      1. To develop confidence in the student's ability to move successfully through a dance sequence presented before a group
      2. To determine definition of level, focus, dimensions direction as they apply to dance.
      3. To learn and practice technical skills such as; brushes, plies, balance, extension, isolation, and rotations.
      4. To move through time and space: rhythm, walk, run, slide, jumps, falls, recoveries, combinations, and variations of these concepts.
      5. To build strength and endurance.
      6. To use dance techniques grounded in an expressive tradition to design dance sequences and to choreograph short dance pieces.
  2. Planned Sequence of Topics and/or Learning Activities

    1. Body placement and dance techniques
      1. Body control, warm-ups, and stretches

    3. Experiments in creative dance
      1. Small groups of students will work on a 1-1/2 to 2-1/2 minute dance piece. These will be choreographed, and controlled pieces. Each group will develop one piece.
      2. The students will perform their dances during class and at a public appearance at the college. Some students may choose to perform their group piece. All students will perform two pieces, which have been developed throughout the semester such as: an adagio and a piece on a social issue.
      3. A 2 to 3 minute individual dance piece will be performed by each student. This piece will be developed and choreographed by the student and will be her final project.
      4. Each required dance piece will be videotaped near the end of semester to viewed, critiqued and evaluated.
