Testing Center

Academics  —  Testing Center  —  CREX Testing

CREX Testing

Departmental challenge exams, or CREX exams, are coordinated by the Office of Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) in cooperation with the Academic Departments at Bucks and are often administered in the Testing Center. Students will need to work with up to four areas of the College for the process of challenging a Bucks course by CREX.

Four Areas

1) The Academic Department that offers the course

Contact the Academic Department(s) directly to obtain exam information and an Invoice. The Academic Department will provide information regarding test preparation and whether the exam is administered in the Testing Center or the Department.

2) The Office of Prior Learning Assessment (PLA)

Complete the top portion and Section 1 of the (PDF) available online, read and sign the back and return it to Student Services. Students wishing to challenge a Bucks course via CREX should familiarize themselves with Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) at Bucks to ensure that they meet and follow the eligibility guidelines and do not miss any potential opportunities to pursue equivalent credit.

3) Student Accounts

CREX exams cost $100 each and the non-refundable fee must be paid to prior to taking the exam. Students will need to provide proof of payment to schedule their CREX exam with the Academic Department or the Testing Center.

4) The Testing Center when applicable

If the CREX exam is administered at the Testing Center, a current government issued ID (e.g., a driver's license, nondriver's State ID card, or passport) is required for any test at the Bucks Testing Center.

Preparing for a CREX Examination

Even when you feel confident of your knowledge of the material, be sure to prepare for the exam. The Academic Department will provide you with information specific to the exam, such as the type of test and names of textbook(s) and/or resource materials to review. If you have already taken or are currently enrolled in the course for the CREX exam you want to take, you must obtain permission from the Academic Dean of the Department in which the course is taught.

Only the exams listed here may be taken to challenge the associated Bucks course. Scores at or above the minimum will lead to equivalent credit for the associated Bucks course, but no letter grade will be awarded. Students who do not achieve the minimum score must wait six months prior to repeating the exam. Credit awarded from a CREX exam will not replace a course grade that is on your Bucks transcript.

Credit based upon examination may not be transferable. However, some colleges and universities may have a process for awarding equivalent credit based upon departmental challenge exam results. You should work directly with the transfer institution to request that they consider them for credit.
