- Students research and explore the art of visual storytelling through published works and hands-on lighting and cinematography techniques for both studio and field projects. Students learn creative composition through lighting, camera techniques, and color manipulation to convey their message.

Course Learning Goals
- analyze the art of cinematography using the appropriate vocabulary;
- apply methods and techniques of visual storytelling, including composition, framing, camera movement, blocking scenes, and depth of field to video projects;
- analyze the use of color and lighting, and its on impact the visual story; and
- apply realistic and pictorial lighting to create video projects.
Planned Sequence of Topics and/or Learning ActivitiesStudents use cinematography and lighting techniques for video productions and explore the works of established cinematographers. They use lights, light meters, filters, in-camera special effects, and mood setting techniques to enhance shot composition and camera movement. Students learn the mechanical basics of various cameras and formats, camera operation, optics and camera support to create thought-provoking images. Students demonstrate their understanding of the art of visual storytelling by creating video projects.
Assessment Methods for Course Learning GoalsStudent assessment is based on the successful completion of assigned projects, the presentation of projects, and the demonstrated use of appropriate vocabulary in oral critiques. Projects are assessed through critiques, oral presentations, and discussions.
