Students are required to travel to assigned site for clinical rotation.
VI. Catalog Course Description
Medical Laboratory students apply theory and classroom materials to the clinical laboratory setting. Students participate in the supervised clinical setting while developing the skills of an entry-level laboratory professional.
VII. Required Course Content and Direction
  1. Course Learning Goals

    Students will:

    1. operate computerized instruments and associated laboratory software effectively, recognizing the need for corrective action, maintenance, and documentation;
    2. identify normal, abnormal, and critical laboratory results for each laboratory department, correlating with clinical diagnosis;
    3. demonstrate professional conduct consistent with ethical guidelines for health care professionals; and
    4. communicate effectively using verbal, written, oral and electronic modalities for a diverse population of patients and health care professionals.
  2. Planned Sequence of Topics and/or Learning Activities

    1. Urinalysis Examinations including interpretation and reporting of results
    2. Staining, reading, and interpretation of Hematology differentials
    3. Analysis of body fluid specimens including cell counts and differential smears.
    4. Reticulocyte counts, Sickle cell prep, Sedimentation Rates, Leukocyte and Platelet manual estimations
    5. Coagulation testing for disease and medication monitoring
    6. Blood typing, atypical antibody screening and identification
    7. Blood component usage and storage
    8. Selection of donor units and compatibility testing
    9. Hemolytic Disease of the Fetus/Newborn
    10. Inoculation of appropriate primary media and selection of conditions for incubation
    11. Gram staining
    12. Primary cultures
    13. Selective and differential media, biochemical identification systems and instrumentation for organism identification
    14. Normal flora vs pathogens in anatomical sites
    15. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing
    16. Immunologic, fluorescent and molecular biology techniques
    17. Quality control procedures, monitoring and corrective actions
    18. Instrument programming and calibration, basic maintenance and troubleshooting.
    19. Special chemistry procedures performed in the affiliate site
    20. Elements of common Clinical Chemistry Test Profiles
    21. Reference range values and critical values
    22. Elements of comprehensive Quality Assurance Programs
    23. Laboratory Competency Practicals in each Laboratory Department
  3. Assessment Methods for Course Learning Goals

    Students satisfy the course learning goals via laboratory-based assignments and correct execution and identification of laboratory case history/unknown samples as assessed by clinical supervisor.
