This course meets the General Education requirement for Quantitative Literacy.

VI. Catalog Course Description
This course is primarily for business, science, liberal arts, and education majors. Topics studied include descriptive measures for empirical data, theory of probability, probability distributions, sampling distributions of statistics from large and small samples, estimation theory, hypothesis testing, correlation, and regression.
VII. Required Course Content and Direction
  1. Course Learning Goals

    Students will:

    1. demonstrate knowledge of fundamental statistical terms, concepts and skills needed to describe data sets using graphs and numerical summaries;
    2. demonstrate knowledge and skills in applying fundamental probability concepts and methods in problem solving;
    3. identify and implement the appropriate inferential statistical test to verify various hypotheses and determine the correct conclusion based on the result of the hypothesis test. [Critical Thinking]; and
    4. demonstrate the ability to apply and explain statistical applications to real life situations; and
    5. develop the ability to analyze, interpret, and apply quantitative information.[Quantitative Literacy].
  2. Planned Sequence of Topics and/or Learning Activities

    1. Descriptive Statistics
      1. Sampling techniques
      2. Graphical displays (Histograms, Stem and Leaf displays, Box and Whisker plots and Frequency Polygons)
      3. Measures of Central Tendency
      4. Measures of Variation
      5. Measures of Position
    2. Probability
      1. Rules of probability
      2. Discrete and Continuous probability distributions, including Binomial, Normal, Chi-Square, and t-distribution
      3. Central Limit Theorem
    3. Inferential Statistics
      1. Sample size
      2. Confidence intervals
      3. Hypothesis testing (one and two samples)
      4. Chi-Square (test of independence and goodness of fit)
    4. Regression and Correlation
      1. Scatter plots
      2. Least Squares regression equation
      3. Correlation coefficient
  3. Assessment Methods for Course Learning Goals

    The student applies mathematical concepts and principles to identify and solve problems presented through informal assessment, such as oral communication among students and between teacher and students and, for the core, formal assessment using open-ended questions reflecting theoretical and applied situations.

    A minimum of 70% of a student's grade must be determined from proctored assessments and work. These proctored assessments include tests, quizzes, or other proctored in-class assignments.

  4. Reference, Resource, or Learning Materials to be used by Student:

    Departmentally-selected textbook and TI-83/84 calculator. Details provided by the instructor of each course section. See course syllabus.
