VI. Catalog Course Description
This introductory communication skills course helps students develop competencies in diverse social and professional communication. Students engage in activities and assignments that focus on diversity, perception, listening skills and conflict management skills.
VII. Required Course Content and Direction
  1. Course Learning Goals

    Students will:

    1. demonstrate an understanding of key concepts and principles of interpersonal communication;
    2. demonstrate effective critical thinking skills through analysis, evaluation, and application of key concepts/theories in an interpersonal context [Gen Ed: Critical Thinking];
    3. demonstrate effective use of verbal and nonverbal elements in communication;
    4. demonstrate an understanding of the complexity of gender, cultural and global differences in communication [Gen Ed: Diversity]; and
    5. demonstrate an understanding of the role of technology in interpersonal context.
    6. Planned Sequence of Topics and/or Learning Activities

      1. introduction to interpersonal communication
      2. societal and cultural influences on self-concept
      3. perceptions of cultural and societal differences
      4. understanding emotion
      5. cross-cultural differences in verbal communication
      6. cross-cultural differences in nonverbal communication
      7. communicating electronically
      8. listening skills
      9. communication climate
      10. conflict management
      11. developing and maintaining relationships socially and in the workplace
      12. gender differences and intercultural communication
      13. complete a research paper and/or presentation that critically examines or analyzes a fundamental concept within interpersonal communication

      Students satisfy the course learning goals via tests, written class exercises, research paper and/or presentation, critical listening assignments, and class participation.
