- VI. Catalog Course Description
- This course introduces the Medical Laboratory student to the Clinical Laboratory setting. Student clinical work occurs in the assigned applicable departments of the laboratory: Hematology, Clinical Chemistry, Microbiology, or the Blood Bank (Immunohematology). Preceptors closely supervise student clinical work.

- select appropriate equipment for a phlebotomy procedure by applying knowledge of anatomy, venipuncture techniques, and potential complications;
- utilize effective communication strategies that can be used within professional interdisciplinary practice;
- demonstrate a commitment to continued professional development by joining a clinical lab-specific professional organization;
- practice professional conduct consistent with ethical guidelines for health care professionals;
- demonstrate competency in processing, analyzing and reporting biological specimens in the clinical laboratory; and
- employ standard precautions when handling, processing and analyzing body fluid samples.
