What Are Instructional Minutes?
Think of them as the equivalent of how YOU spend YOUR time with students during face-to-face classes. Not what you do in preparation for class, but what YOU do IN your face-to-face classroom. You spend time guiding, lecturing, delivering Powerpoint presentations, overseeing discussions, explaining concepts, guiding research and activities, overseeing time spent on group work, conducting labs, delivering and proctoring exams, facilitating the critique of student presentations, etc. Now translate that to how YOU do that in the online classroom. How are YOU instructing students?
SUGGESTIONS for detailing instructional minutes:
- Introducing a lesson or module
- Delivering or guiding through a lecture, presentation
- Activity: creating activities, guding the interaction with; material, other students, the teacher, research, application, discovery, creation, reactions
- Assignments: providing instructions – directing students on how to apply what they learned
- Closing: facilitating discussions, quizzes, projects, labs, collaborative presentations and interaction
EXAMPLE of a 2250 instructional minutes for a 3-credit eLearning course:
|30 minutes||- Orientation|
|225 minutes||- Introduction (15 min.) to each of the 15 modules|
|450 minutes||- PowerPoint presentations with audio lectures (30 min.) in each of the 15 modules|
|900 minutes||- Discussion (student-student, student-teacher, teacher-student interaction)(1 hour) for 15 modules|
|225 minutes||- Viewing media (15-min. videos) in 15 modules|
|180 minutes||- Quizzes, tests (30 min.) in 6 modules|
|235 minutes||- Collaborative projects and critiques|
State the number of minutes spent in face-to-face instruction, then detail the remaining online instructional minutes.
