  • This course is strongly recommended, but not required, for students scoring Level 2 on the College placement test.
  • This course is mandatory for students enrolled in READ090 who score at Level 2 on the final course assessment test. It must be taken the semester immediately following READ090.
  • Some sections are paired with content course.
  • Transferability determined by the transfer institution.
VI. Catalog Course Description
This course develops and improves reading comprehension skills and learning strategies that will enhance academic performance across the curriculum. Emphasis is on the transfer and application of comprehension, critical thinking, vocabulary, and study skills to college course material.
VII. Required Course Content and Direction
  1. Course Learning Goals

    Students will:

    1. develop a variety of techniques to expand personal and academic vocabulary;
    2. increase awareness of the skills, strategies, and resources needed to effectively complete academic tasks;
    3. improve reading skills to facilitate comprehension of college level material across the curriculum;
    4. develop a repertoire of active reading strategies, monitor their effectiveness, and adjust strategies for increased learning;
    5. acquire learning strategies and techniques to improve proficiency in interacting with text and lecture material; and
    6. effectively utilize the College's website and learning resources to increase academic success.
  2. Planned Sequence of Topics and/or Learning Activities

    All activities focus on the development and transfer of reading and study strategies to content course material. Throughout the course of the academic term, students read authentic text and engage in a variety of academic tasks in order to:

    1. develop and apply a repertoire of strategies, such as use of the dictionary or glossary, structural analysis and/or context clues, to expand personal and academic vocabulary
    2. analyze course assignments to identify the personal and academic skills and resources necessary to execute and successfully complete the task
    3. employ active reading strategies, including activating prior knowledge, setting a purpose for reading, predicting outcomes, and selecting comprehension strategies appropriate to the reading material
    4. adjust reading rate and strategies, such as skimming and scanning, to content and purpose for reading
    5. utilize textbook features and effectively apply a textbook study/reading method which includes prereading activities, such as previewing/surveying and development of guide questions to improve comprehension of academic texts
    6. demonstrate the ability to effectively comprehend and organize information by summarizing, highlighting, mapping, outlining, and/or annotating a textbook chapter
    7. identify and develop effective time management systems to increase academic success
    8. decipher graphs and charts and interpret their relevance to course material
    9. develop test-taking strategies by predicting and formulating possible objective/ subjective test items, creating chapter study guides, and analyzing past performance on tests to adjust future study strategies
    10. practice a variety of active listening strategies to effectively record and organize information presented in a lecture format
    11. apply information learned in a Library orientation to complete a content course related follow-up activity
    12. utilize Student Information System to monitor academic performance, understand their program evaluation, identify advisors appropriate to major, and access the Web registration process
    13. utilize the College's learning resources, such as the Tutoring, Transfer, and Career Centers to support and further their academic goals
  3. Assessment Methods for Course Learning Goals


    1. take quizzes and tests;
    2. complete computerized assessments;
    3. complete homework assignments;
    4. write summaries;
    5. write reflective essays at the beginning and end of the semester to demonstrate awareness and application of metacognitive skills and use of comprehension strategies;
    6. monitor their progress and document their achievement of course outcomes by compiling a portfolio of work that demonstrates effort, progress, mastery, and reflection on the learning process;
    7. meet with the instructor throughout the semester to review the portfolios to provide both formative and summative assessment of the process and outcomes of learning; and
    8. complete academic tasks for content area courses.
  4. Reference, Resource, or Learning Materials to be used by Student:

    Students use reading skills textbooks, authentic materials, such as novels, newspaper articles, college textbook chapters and websites, computer-assisted tutorials, reading journals, and portfolios.
