VI. Catalog Course Description
This course is a survey of development and growth from conception through adolescence. The physical, emotional, intellectual, and social processes of maturation are examined. Emphasis is on the adjustment of the individual to his or her peer group, social institutions, the community, and the home.
VII. Required Course Content and Direction
  1. Course Learning Goals

    Students will:

    1. explain the major developmental theories (Freud, Erikson, and Piaget) by identifying various psychosexual, psychosocial, and cognative theories;
    2. analyze the "nature/nurture" contributions to intelligence, language, gender, and physical/social/emotional development from conception through adolescence;
    3. identify the various psychological research methods; and
    4. apply one or more concepts, theories and/or research findings given examples of human development.
  2. Planned Sequence of Topics and/or Learning Activities

    The following topics are presented:

    1. theories of human development, including civic, personal, moral, and ethical considerations
    2. genetic and environmental determinants in development and their interaction
    3. research methods used by developmental psychologists
    4. issues in conception and prenatal development
    5. physical, cognative, social, and emotional development through adolescence
    6. language and perceptual development through childhood
    7. family communication and interaction patterns
  3. Assessment Methods for Course Learning Goals

    Exams, quizzes, classroom exercises, class and online participation, and/or projects as specified in the individual instructor's course format will be utilized. A minimum of four (4) examinations will be administered.
