VI. Catalog Course Description
This course satisfies the transfer requirements for Physical Education majors. Students are taught and practice square and folk dances. The course also teaches proper etiquette and appreciation of dance. Lifetime health benefits related to proper nutrition and exercise physiology are examined.
VII. Required Course Content and Direction
  1. Learning Goals:

    1. The student will learn valid concepts of exercise physiology and how to apply them to square and folk dance.


    2. The student will learn valid concepts of nutrition and how to apply them to his own diet.


    3. To become familiar with a variety of square and folk dance.


    4. To understand the potential values of Dance.


    5. To develop a sense of rhythm and an ability to move effectively in time with the music.


    6. To acquire some of the basic skills needed to dance.


    7. To understand the role of dance in various cultures and how these dances developed into their present day forms.


    8. To become familiar with square and folk dance terminology.


    9. To develop desirable social attitudes through participation in a group activity.


    10. To provide an opportunity for each student to teach a dance.


    11. To execute basic positions and formations of square and folk dances.


    12. To demonstrate successfully the technique for dancing well with a partner, including leading and following.


    13. To provide and opportunity for each student to teach a dance.


    14. To become familiar with opportunities for participation in dance at the College, community, and throughout the world.

    Department selected textbook or handouts provided. Details of course policies will be given in the Course Format created by the instructor for each course. Students will receive the Course Format when they enroll in the course and attend class.
VIII. Teaching Methods Employed
Movements of the Basic Program on Caller-lab and selected Mainstream Movements of Square Dancing are introduced daily in an orderly fashion. Students are taught basic folk dance steps, and selected folk dances are presented. Several contras are also introduced. Each student presents a dance of his or her choice, and students are encouraged as a class to attend a square dance sponsored by an area square dance club.
