VI. Catalog Course Description
This Course is designed to teach students the fundamentals of downhill skiing. Basic concepts of exercise physiology and nutrition are presented.
VII. Required Course Content and Direction
  1. Course Learning Goals

    1. The student will learn that lifelong wellness is achieved and sustained by practicing habits that include regular exercise, and proper nutrition.


    2. The student will learn valid concepts of exercise physiology and how to apply them to skiing.


    3. The student will learn to valid concepts of nutrition and how to apply them to his own diet.


    4. The student will learn the history, terminology, and nature of skiing.


    5. To learn pre-season conditioning exercises to prevent injuries.


    6. To introduce the "weekend skier" to warm-up exercises and weight training programs to reduce injuries on the slope.


    7. To become knowledgeable in the selection and care of ski equipment.


    8. Performance Objectives:
      1. Demonstrate the proper method of carrying skis, putting skis in holding ski poles.
      2. Step turn on a flat terrain making at least a 180 degree reversal of direction.
      3. Demonstrate a proper fall and correctly rise after a fall.
      4. Walk and glide on a level and straight upgrade.
      5. Sidestep up a 15-degree slope and Herring bone a 10-degree slope 50 feet.
      6. Diagonal sidestep up a 15-degree slope for 50 feet and step turn on a 10-degree slope.
      7. Execute a straight running position down a 10-degree slope for a minimum of 50 feet.
      8. Execute 4 linked snowplow turns on a 10-degree slope.
      9. Correctly brake feet on a 10-degree slope using the snowplow.
      10. Execute 4 linked stem turns on a slope on not less than 10 degrees.
      11. Kick turn to both the right and left on the level. The turn must be a 180 degree reversal of direction with the skis finishing parallel.
      12. Diagonal for at least 50 feet going both right and left on a slope of not less than 15 degrees.
      13. Kick turn right and left on a slope of not less than 15 degrees.
      14. Diagonal for at least 50 feet going both right and left on a slope of not less than 15 degrees.
      15. Execute three long traverses across a 10-degree slope linking the traverses with a stem turn.
      16. Sideslip in two directions down the fall line for 20 feet.
      17. Execute right and left stops on a slope of not less than 15 degrees using the uphill christie.

    This course satisfies the requirements for the BCCC Core Curriculum.

    2. Applied Physiology of exercise
      1. Principles of an exercise prescription:
        1. Frequency, intensity, time
        2. Overload, progressive resistance, specificity, recovery
      2. Physiological effects of regular anaerobic exercise
      3. Physiological effects of regular aerobic exercise
      4. Cross training and how a variety of activities contribute to cardiovascular and total fitness

    3. The role of diet and nutrition - What is a quality diet?
      1. Weight management and body composition
      2. Cardiovascular disease and atherosclerosis
      3. Heat balance, fluid and electrolyte consumption
      4. Role of the nutrients in energy metabolism
      5. Relationship among stress, diet and exercise

    4. Concepts of recuperation, positive adaptation and deconditioning
      1. Immediate and correct care of athletic injuries
