Students spend between six and nine hours per week outside of class in activities, such as reviewing vocabulary, reading, completing written exercises, and preparing oral presentations. Active participation is essential for the successful completion of this course.

VI. Catalog Course Description
This course, conducted in German, is a continuation of the intermediate sequence and it emphasizes greater proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students study more complex language structures, read, view, and discuss current German media, read more difficult literary texts, and critically examine German cultures.
VII. Required Course Content and Direction
  1. Course Learning Goals

    Students will:

    1. refine and expand their mastery of the four language skills: speaking, listening comprehension, reading, and writing [Arts/Humanities];
    2. advance their communicative competence and provide elaborate responses to more challenging conversational topics;
    3. analyze more difficult authentic German texts, both literary and factual;
    4. demonstrate advanced mastery of written German; and
    5. explain various aspects of life in the German-speaking countries [Diversity].
  2. Planned Sequence of Topics and/or Learning Activities

    Grammatical topics:

    Review of the cases and tenses presented in the preceding levels
    Subordinate clauses
    Double infinitive constructions
    The passive voice
    Subjunctive mood in the past tense

    Vocabulary and social topics:

    Vocabulary will vary depending on the specific current events and literary texts discussed
    Idiomatic expressions
    Discussion and writing strategies

    Cultural contexts:

    German-language prose, poetry, drama, music, and film
    Current political, social and cultural issues in the German-speaking countries

  3. Assessment Methods for Course Learning Goals

    Students will:

    1. take quizzes and tests;
    2. complete assignments, such as short compositions and grammatical exercises;
    3. perform listening comprehension exercises; and
    4. participate in conversations, dialogues, oral interviews, and/or presentations that assess proficiency levels.

    Quizzes and tests taken in class include the cultural topics presented in the course.

  4. Reference, Resource, or Learning Materials to be used by Student:

    German intermediate/advanced level proficiency based program, consisting of a review grammar and a cultural/conversational reader and activities book. Current newspaper and magazine articles from Spiegel, Focus, Stern, Wochenschau and Internet sources. Video programs, such as Lindenstrasse from ARD and Tagesschau from ZDF provide more extensive authentic language experiences. Schau ins Land will be used for audio segments.
