VI. Catalog Course Description
Historic Preservation Planning and Sustainability introduces students to the principles, practices, and procedures of land-use planning and public policy associated with historic preservation planning. Sustainable communities and the historic preservation connection are discussed within the context of case studies. Issues include combating sprawl, preserving rural landscapes, and managing growth.
VII. Required Course Content and Direction
  1. Course Learning Goals

    Students will:

    1. identify the legal and legislative framework of historic preservation on the local, state and federal levels, and the public and private sector players;
    2. explain how historic preservation is integrated into land use and comprehensive planning;
    3. articulate the role historic preservation plays in economic development and revitalization; and
    4. demonstrate how preservation planning spans a host of techniques beyond regulation, including education, public relations, and community advocacy.
  2. Planned Sequence of Topics and/or Learning Activities

    1. introduction to the issues within the preservation field, which impact community planning
    2. examine the history of the historic preservation field and its foundations
    3. recognize the influential preservation theories and how they impact the profession
    4. application of historic preservation and sustainability models to various community planning scenarios and their consequences

    Historic Preservation Planning students are evaluated by:

    1. student quizzes
    2. short student reports
    3. final comprehensive student report
