Class will be lecture and demonstration with limited hands-on exercises.
VI. Catalog Course Description
This lecture/lab course is designed to provide a person with the necessary skills to establish computer networks for small organizations or home offices. Topics include: introduction to network protocols, physical and logical network topologies, transmission media, connectivity devices, fundamentals of managing operating systems, internet connectivity, managing peripherals, troubleshooting, and security.
VII. Required Course Content and Direction
  1. Learning Goals:

    The student will be able to:
    1. identify and compare the different types of networks that can be used in a SOHO structure.
    2. explain the different protocols that can be used in a SOHO network.
    3. select the appropriate network physical and logical topologies to use for a functioning network.
    4. differentiate between the various transmission media that can be effectively used in a SOHO network.
    5. identify the connectivity devices that are used in a SOHO setting.
    6. describe and evaluate the different operating systems available for use in a SOHO.
    7. perform an installation of an operating system.
    8. describe how to select an ISP and manage an internet connection.
    9. list the peripherals that can be used in a SOHO network.
    10. describe the steps necessary to configure and maintain functional peripherals and software.
    11. explain the procedures for remote computing.
    12. demonstrate effective troubleshooting techniques to resolve basic hardware and software problems.
    13. list security threats and ways to prevent them.
    14. describe ethical issues in networking planning, design and use.
    15. identify elements in the successfully planning and implementation of a SOHO network.
