Spring 2020 Grading

  • Will there be a Pass/No Pass option?

After students receive a final grade, Bucks is giving students the option to select PA (Pass) or NP (No Pass) as the grade mode for a course versus the standard letter grading mode. This will be an option, on a course-by-course basis, for the spring 2020 semester only. To select PA/NP students will need to complete the appropriate form between May 13 and May 22.

Electing Pass/No Pass does not effect your GPA in any way. NP does count toward attempted credits.

Attempted Credits = any course for which you are registered after the add/drop period, including courses with: A, B, C, D, W, I, PA, NP grades.
Earned Credit = all TR transferred in credits, and all courses for which grades of A, B, C, D, and PA better have been earned.

  • How does my grade translate to PA/NP?

If you complete the form to elect to change grade mode, a grade of A, B, B+, C or C+ will be converted to PA (Pass) and a grade of D, D+, or F will be converted to NP (No Pass). This happens only in the event you have elected for the Pass/No Pass option for a specific class.

  • Is the change in grade mode mandatory?

No. Bucks is providing you with a choice. You can opt to change the grade mode from a standard letter grade to the PA/NP grade mode for none, some, or all of your courses. Please consider carefully whether this is a good option for you. Review this FAQ and any communication from your program before making your decision. For many students, receiving letter grades may be the best option.

  • Do I have to change all of my grades or can I pick and choose?

You can opt to change the grade mode from a standard letter grade to the PA/NP grade mode for none, some, or all of your courses. Please consider carefully whether this is a good option for you. Review this FAQ and any communication from your program before making your decision. For many students, receiving letter grades may be the best option.

  • What is the deadline to change grade mode?

If you wish to change the grade mode for a Spring 2020 course, you must do so no later than 5 p.m. EDT on Friday, May 22. Your choice of grade mode is final and cannot be appealed.

  • How do I elect to change grade mode?

From May 13 at 7 a.m. EDT through May 22 at 5 p.m. EDT, you will find the form on our forms page at bucks.edu/policy/records/forms/.

  • Will a pass grade affect my ability to transfer the course?

The transferability of a course is determined by each transfer institution. We cannot guarantee that a course with a final grade of “PA” would be eligible for transfer.

  • If the course I am taking is a pre-requisite course for another course I want to take at Bucks, can I select the pass/no pass option?

For courses with a prerequisite requirement of having completed a prior course with a C or higher, a PA will satisfy the prerequisite, but a NP will not satisfy the prerequisite. If you are considering or enrolled in Nursing or Medical Lab Technician see below.

  • What about Nursing?

AD Nursing courses (NURS 102 and NURS 202) must have a letter grade to meet the requirements for academic progression and graduation. For students applying to the nursing program, a grade of “PA” will be accepted for non-BIOL science classes earned in the Spring 2020 semester ONLY. This includes transfer grades where the originating institution used a conversion of A, B and C grades to indicate “PA”. Institutions that allowed grades lower than “C” within the parameters of “PA” will not transfer nor count toward the completion for the nursing degree. Students who are enrolled in BIOL 181, BIOL 182 and/or BIOL 228 for the spring 2020 semester at Bucks County Community College, and elect a grade of “PA” for the course, or students taking equivalent courses at other institutions where a “PA” indicates a grade of A, B or C, will be conditionally accepted to the Fall 2020 nursing program. However, students must repeat the course and earn the required grade of “B” or better as required to meet the prerequisite and corequisites of each nursing course by its term as planned in the program sequence.

  • What if I am applying for the Medical Lab Technician program?

For students applying to the MLT program, a grade of "PA" will be accepted for non-BIOL science classes earned in the Spring 2020 semester ONLY. This includes transfer grades where the originating institution used a conversion of A, B and C grades to indicate "PA". Institutions that allowed grades lower than "C" within the parameters of "PA" will not transfer nor count toward the completion of the MLT degree.

  • What if I already withdrew from my course?

If you already withdrew from a spring 2020 course, then you are no longer enrolled in the course and not eligible for a final grade.

  • What if I am repeating a course?

If you are repeating a course, we do not recommend you change to a pass/no pass grade without first consulting advising@bucks.edu.

  • I'm concerned faculty will look down on this option - should I be worried?

Absolutely not. Students have faced highly unusual circumstances as a result of COVID-19, and each student’s experience is unique. If you choose this option, there is no judgement on the part of the college, your department or your faculty.

  • How will Pass/No Pass grades affect my Financial Aid eligibility?

All students are expected to earn college credit for at least 67% of the classes in which they enroll. Financial Aid will measure your financial aid satisfactory academic progress by taking your cumulative earned credits divided by your cumulative attempted credits to determine your earned percentage.

Attempted Credits = any course for which you are registered after the add/drop period, including courses with: A, B, C, D, W, I, PA, NP grades.
Earned Credit = all TR transferred in credits, and all courses for which grades of A, B, C, D, and PA better have been earned.

Courses that are repeated to improve a grade are counted in attempted hours, but only one passing grade is counted toward the earned credit total.

If you have additional questions please contact finaid@bucks.edu.

  • How will a Pass/No Pass grade impact my GI Bill education benefits?

Bucks County Community College and its certifying officials are monitoring the VA Educational Benefits impact due to COVID-19. We are waiting for additional guidance from both the VA and the Pennsylvania State Approving Agency. If you are a GI Bill student and have questions about your specific circumstance, please contact the VA Education Call Center at 1-888-422-4551 between 8am-7pm Eastern Time, Monday – Friday.

  • What if my class cannot be completed remotely and my professor issues incompletes to all students?

If your class cannot be completed remotely and you have to finish on campus you will have a week after your Professor issues final grades to complete the form to elect to change grade mode.

  • If I choose to receive a PA/NP grade and change my mind can I appeal?

No, this is a final decision and your choice of grade mode cannot be appealed.

  • Who can I reach out to for help in making this decision?

We understand that your decision to pursue a PA or NP grade can depend on any number of factors. If you were unable to find an answer to your question in this FAQ, please feel free to e-mail the Advising & Transfer Center at advising@bucks.edu for further guidance.
