Keynote
Matt Frederickson
Whether we like it or not, everyone of us has a digital presence online, whether it’s email through
work; social media sites; or online shopping. In this session, we will discuss some of the strategies
the “bad guys” use, and more importantly, what you can do to stay safe online. Topics covered
include email security; maintaining a secure social presence; and other general strategies to reduce
your risk while online.
Nearpod
Damon Hunnicutt & Andrea Velez (Nearpod Rep)
Create engaging presentations or lectures using Nearpod. This tool helps you to use content and
assessment slides to facilitate action among your audience, while stimulating information retrieval
and learning.
HR Portals and Vendor Sites
Tara Heinold
In this session, HR team members will show you how to navigate resources that are available online
through the MyBucks portal pages, as well as helpful on-demand resources that are available
through vendor sites. You will learn how to navigate benefit information, access online skill building
training, and obtain frequently used forms. We will also feature new information added to the HR
portals in recent months.
Open Educational Resources (OER) at Bucks
Bill Hemmig, Erin Niclaus & Casey Kerins
OER’s are free of cost to students and free of standard copyright restrictions. What’s going on with
them here at Bucks? Bill Hemmig (Learning Resources) will present an overview of the college’s
OER initiative. Erin Niclaus (Social & Behavioral Sciences) will describe how she created a course
template using an open textbook, how she uses it, what her students think of it, and how easy it
is for other instructors to adopt. Casey Kerins (Institutional Research) will then share the results of
surveys of students in OER course sections and a student success comparison study.
Tools and Tricks for the Multi-Ability Classroom
Lindsey Troyanoski, M.Ed. Microsoft Learning Consultant
In today’s multi-ability classroom, a teacher must meet the needs of all students including English
Language Learners, students with reading disabilities, and gifted students. Microsoft’s accessibility
options, built-in to its core products, extend beyond just the ability to provide digital resources
for students. In this session, you will experience how free tools like Immersive Reader, Office Lens,
Microsoft Translator, and others make it easy to provide learning materials that are accessible for all
students.
Food Insecurity
Samantha Gross & Christina McGinley
30% of surveyed Bucks students experienced food insecurity last academic year. Hear about
programs in place to assist these students, plans to move forward, and share suggestions to help
students succeed in the face of basic needs insecurity.
Are Students Missing-out on Your Course Content in Canvas?
Georglyn Davidson & Regina Heirholzer
Over 50% of students access their Canvas courses through mobile devices. Many of them go
directly to their To-Do list, bypassing all of the important course materials provided in modules.
In this workshop you will learn how to maximize assignments, discussions, and quizzes to make
sure your students are interacting with the content and not just doing the assignment.
ERP-What’s New
Brant Steen
Having been on Datatel/Ellucian Colleague for almost 25 years, it can be easy to lose sight of the
capabilities of more modern systems. In this session, view a series of hand-selected, interesting
features from some of the more modern ERP and SIS platforms that are likely in contention to be
our next vendor. Begin thinking about what may be possible in the years to come.
Digital Badges and LinkedIn
Christina McGinley & Jackie Burger
Growth of the Bucks digital badge initiative will be shared. Attendees will also discover the benefits
of digital badges as components of a LinkedIn profile.
Learn an Easy Way to Add Closed Captions to Your Own Videos
Instructions for uploading a file into YouTube
Regina Hierholzer & Debra Carney
Closed captions not only benefit students with hearing impairments and those for whom English
is a second language, but also those who benefit from multiple modes of input. According to a
survey done by Educause, “ways in which closed captions can aid learning include comprehension,
accuracy, engagement, and retention.” In addition, providing closed captions is a best practice
outlined by W3C web standards and a legal requirement of Section 508 of the National
Rehabilitation Act.
