Nicole Steinberg Named 2021 Poet Laureate

Steinberg will read from her works Sunday, Nov. 14, at Bucks County Community College in Newtown. Nicole Steinberg of Newtown has been named the 2021 Bucks County Poet Laureate, officials at Bucks County Community College announced.

Steinberg, a published poet who works in marketing, was the winner among dozens of entrants in the 45th annual contest, said Dr. Ethel Rackin, director of the poet laureate program administered by the college. The contest is sponsored by the Bucks County Commissioners.

Steinberg is the author of two books of poetry: Glass Actress (Furniture Press Books, 2017) and Getting Lucky (Spooky Girlfriend Press, 2013). Her published chapbooks are Fat Dreams (Barrelhouse, 2018), Clever Little Gang, winner of the 4X4 Furniture Press Chapbook Award (2014), and two titles from dancing girl press: Undressing (2014) and Birds of Tokyo (2011). She is also the editor of Forgotten Borough: Writers Come to Terms with Queens (SUNY Press, 2011), and holds an MFA in poetry from The New School and a BA in creative writing from Brandeis University.

In addition to many journal publications, her work has been featured or reviewed in the New York TimesNewsweekFlavorwireBitch, and Hyperallergic. She was the founder/curator of New York's EARSHOT reading series, and since 2019, she has served on the Board of the American Poetry Review. She works in Philadelphia as the Chief Marketing and Communications Officer for Moore College of Art & Design.

Steinberg lives in Newtown with her wife Laure and their French bulldog Prune Danish, and she works in Philadelphia as the Chief Marketing and Communications Officer for Moore College of Art & Design. In her spare time, she enjoys going to concerts and readings, making playlists, cooking, traveling to new and well-loved places, and various forms of retail therapy, especially earrings and books. Steinberg will be honored with a poetry reading and reception at 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 14, in Tyler 142 on the Newtown Campus, 275 Swamp Rd., Newtown, Pa., 18940. Admission and parking are free. The reading will also be broadcast via Zoom.

Steinberg will be reading with 2020 Laureate Jane Edna Mohler, and they will be joined by the three runners-up, Judith Lagana, Lynda Gene Rymond, and Tara Tamburello. Ernest Hilbert will also be reading.

The judges for this year’s contest were Philadelphia poet Ernest Hilbert and Maggie Smith from Columbus, Ohio.
