- In addition to class studio time, students work five (5) hours outside of class each week under the supervision of a lab assistant. Safe shop practices are emphasized.
- VI. Catalog Course Description
- Students develop an understanding of the aesthetics and vocabulary of sculpture by expressing their personal vision. They explore and determine the visual content of their work and increase their knowledge of sculpture history. Works are created through casting, fabricating, using mixed media, and/or may be developed for a specific site.

Course Learning Goals
Students will:
- demonstrate advanced knowledge of the history of sculpture with the aim of understanding how visual ideas are generated;
- design conceptually based imagery utilizing:
- site specific;
- figurative;
- installation; and
- and/or other criteria.
- demonstrate an understanding of the technical mastery necessary to realize an abstract concept through the application of:
- metal welding;
- woodcarving;
- plaster construction; and
- combinations of media.
- fabricate a sculpture larger than oneself;
- apply safe studio practices and advanced tool maintenance; and
- analyze projects through critiques, oral presentations, and discussions.

- development of sophisticated sculptural ideation
- proposal with drawings
- artist's statement

- historical and contemporary references as they relate to a student's concept
- students are responsible for finished sculptures, research, and drawings appropriate to the works

Assessment Methods for Course Learning Goals
- Course learning goals are assessed with group critiques of all assignments, based on the successful design, execution, and completion of specific projects, and on the appropriate use of tools and shop safety practices.
- At least two individual critiques with the instructor are held each semester, to assess projects using the above criteria and to review students' overall progress.
- Students' finished projects are assessed on overall aesthetic quality and progress.
