This was a few days after King Zahir Shah, who ruled for
40 years, was overthrown in an almost bloodless coup.

The new ruler is Mohammad Daoud Khan who ruled until he was
overthrown and murdered in 1978.

This is in the Karakoram mountains of northern Pakistan.



The Karakoram mountains are the western end of the Himalayan mountain chain.

peaks on earth.

This is in a valley of the Hindu Kush mountain range near the
borders of Afghanistan and what was the Soviet Union.



At this nice lodge in Chitral, we were entertained by local villagers.
