NEWS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Student Newspaper Editor Wins Award for Feature WritingTom Treweek takes second place in Keystone Collegiate contest, competing against students at four-year schools Tom Treweek (pictured, right), a 26-year-old Sellersville resident and managing editor of the Centurion student newspaper at Bucks County Community College, took second prize in the feature writing category in this year's Keystone Collegiate newspaper competition sponsored by the Pennsylvania Newspaper Association. It was the second year in a row that the Centurion was the only community college student newspaper in the state to be honored in the contest, which judges student papers from across Pennsylvania in a variety of categories. Treweek's story, headlined "Student Ready to Serve," profiled a Bucks student in the National Guard who was being sent to Iraq. In their comments, judges called Treweek's article a "compelling story of a student facing the possibility of going to war." "It's nice to win," said Treweek, who is moving to the Southwest to continue his professional journalism career after working part-time at several newspapers in the Bucks County area. "I know the Centurion staff in the future will continue this winning tradition." Last year the Centurion won four awards, three of which Treweek had a hand in: second place for layout and design, second place for a photo story, and an honorable mention for a sports story. The Centurion also won first place in the photo story category last year. Journalism Professor Tony Rogers (pictured, left) said he was proud of Treweek and the paper's staff. "When we go head-to-head with some of the biggest student newspapers in the state and still manage to win awards, I think it shows what good work is being done here." Centurion editor-in-chief Ari Halbkram added, "It's been an honor to work with Tom for so long. It brings me such pride to see him win. I am looking forward to next year when I'm confident we'll win even more awards." Bucks offers a 60-credit associate of arts degree in journalism and a 27-credit certificate in broadcast and print journalism. Classes are held in the state-of-the-art Centurion newsroom on the college's Newtown campus. In addition, some classes are available online through the college's distance learning program.
