course is managed by the BbVista Online Learning
software system.
Physics is the fundamental science. Its laws and
theories describe
the workings of the physical universe at the most basic level.
This course is a rigorous introduction to classical physics, and will
include relevant elements of modern physics.
The course will emphasize physical principles, conceptual
understanding, problem solving skills, and laboratory work.
Demonstrations and laboratories will illustrate physical principles and
reveal the central role of observation in physics.
Please refer to the official course syllabus for specific objectives
and goals
of Physics
I. or Physics
II.
Your mathematical preparation must
include performance level skills in:
arithmetic, scientific notation, algebra, plane and solid geometry,
trigonometry, and calculus.
You must also be able to efficiently carry out standard numerical
calculations and graphing operations on a scientific calculator.
The
prerequisite
for
Physics
I
is MATH140:
(C
or
better).
The prerequisite for Physics II is PHYS121:
(C
or
better).
As you will quickly realize, physics is much more than memorizing a
series of isolated facts and equations.
I urge you keep up with
the rigorous workload.
Physics I will cover chapters 2-13 in your textbook. {Volume I}.
Physics II will cover chapters
14 and 20-27 in your textbook. {Volume II}.
You are expected to carefully follow the schedules, due dates, and
instructions on
the course website.
Basic Course Requirements:
1. Study all assigned material and complete all assigned
activities for each course chapter .
2. Complete online chapter homework assignments using MasteringPhysics.
3. Complete laboratory asignments. Labs are done at home and
reports are submitted online.
4. Complete three exams. All exams
are taken in
person at the
Testing Center.
You must show a Photo ID to take an exam.
If you live far away from any of the three BCCC locations, it is
your responsibility make arrangements
with the testing center to take
exams near your
home by arranging for an off-site proctror.
Bring your calculator and pencils to these two hour exams.
You are not permitted to bring
any notes or other reference material
into an exam.
I will provide a list of useful and relevant constants and equations
for each exam.

Essential University Physics, 1st Edition, by Richard
Wolfson
This is a two volume paperback
set. {available with student access code
at the BCCC
school
bookstore}.
If you get a used book, you will have to purchase the student
access code online.
The same code can be used for both physics I and physics II.
Schaum's
Outlines:
College
Physics
10th
edition, by F Bueche and E Hecht
This a single (very
inexpensive) paperback that will be used for Physics I and Physics II.
It is an extensive collection of standard physics problems with clear,
complete, solutions.
It is also available at the BCCC school bookstore.
Graphing
Scientific Calculator: Texas Instruments model TI83+ (or
equivalent)
Various laboratory supplies: cm ruler, protractor, graph paper, string,
etc. will be
required to complete some assignments.
Your course grade
will be based on:
A Online Homework Assignments {MasteringPhysics } = 15% of
your
final grade
B Laboratory Assignments = 10%
of your final grade {labs are done at home}
C Three Exams @ 25% each = 75%
of your
final grade {taken at
the BCCC Newtown testing center}
If you miss a exam, it
can be made up only if you
provide
documented extenuating circumstances.
You should review all relevant catalog information and
regulations.
Pay particular attention to the rules regarding
grading, cheating,
plagiarism, sexual harassment, and last day to withdraw.
Disability
Accommodations
In compliance with the Bucks County Community College policy and equal
access laws, appropriate academic accommodations can be made for
students eligible for such support. Students are encouraged to
register with the Disability Services Office (215-968-8463) to verify
their eligibility for appropriate accommodations. Please speak to
your instructor about any requests for academic accommodations or other
concerns as early in the semester as possible.
