How To Install Windows 98 SE at BCCC

To install this you will need

A Windows 98 Startup (floppy) disk with XCOPY files. (Click here for instructions on how to make one)
A Windows 98 Second Edition CD-ROM (or the MegaDisc 2000 CD)
A Valid Windows 98 Product Key
Any driver disks/files (Cow disk for Gateways)

Here are some general steps to install Windows 98 Second Edition (SE) on a typical machine at BCCC.  Some of your results may differ depending on the machine you are installing it on.

Prepare the Hard Drive

  1. Boot the system with Windows 98 Startup floppy (with XCOPY)
  2. When prompted, Select 1. Start Computer with CD-ROM Support. It will create a 2MB RAMDISK and name it D: (of the next available drive letter) it should list your CD-ROM drive as the next letter (probably E:)
  3. If necessary, run FDISK and re-partition your drive as needed. If you partition the drive, you MUST restart the computer again with CD-ROM support.
  4. Format the drive using the Unconditional (/u), Quick (/q), and System (/s) switches. NOTE: the quick switch will not work FDISK was used in the previous step. In this case omit the /q from the command. Format c: /u /q /S

Copy the Install files to the hard drive

  1. Create a Win98 directory on the hard drive.  MD Win98 from the C:\> prompt.
  2. Insert the Windows 98 SE CD-ROM into the drive.
  3. Use the XCOPY command to copy all the files and directories from the Win98 directory on the CD-ROM to the new Win98 directory on the hard drive. Use the Subdirectory (/s) and Empty (/e) switches to copy all subdirectories.
  4. XCOPY E:\win98 c:\win98 /s /e (Where E: is the letter of the CD-ROM.)
  5. Files will be copied to your hard drive. This can take a few minutes. When finished, there should be around 778 files copied. There should also be 2 subfolders, TOUR and OLS.
  6. Remove the CD from the drive.

Run Windows Setup using the configuration file

By using a prepared script file, you can install Windows 98 with a pre-configured set of options. The file we have prepared is called MSBATCH.INF.

Download MSBATCH.INF

  1. Copy MSBATCH.INF from the floppy drive to the C:\win98 directory.   Use this command: copy a:\msbatch.inf c:\win98
  2. If you didn't use the /s switch when formatting the partition, make the partition bootable. Type sys c: from the dos prompt a:>
  3. Remove the bootable floppy from the drive and reboot from the hard drive.
  4. Switch to the Win98 directory on the Hard Drive. Type cd win98 and hit ENTER key.
  5. Run Setup using the msbatch.inf file. Type setup msbatch.inf and hit ENTER
  6. Setup will cue you to run a routine check of the system. Hit ENTER key.
  7. Scandisk will run on all Hard Drives and partitions. When it is finished use the arrow keys to highlight <EXIT> and hit ENTER key.
  8. Many of the questions that Windows 98 would normally ask will be answered by the configuration file.  The computer will automatically restart several times during the process.
  9. License Agreement:  Select I accept ...., click Next>
  10. Windows Product Key:  The product key should already be entered. Click Next>
  11. The computer will automatically restart at least once more.
  12. Put the following icons in the Recycle Bin if they appear on the desktop:
    Setup MSN
    Online Services
    Outlook Express
    Connect to the Internet
  13. Check the system properties and see if all devices are working properly. If not, load the appropriate drivers according to the manufacturer's recommendation.
