E-Mail and Voicemail will be checked daily, 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM, Monday-Friday. Calls will be returned within 24 hours. 
Placing a call or e-mail without talking directly to ME does not alleviate any responsibilities towards course deadlines
I will be happy to discuss any concerns you have with the coursework. Please feel free to meet with me to discuss choice of speech topics, research techniques, and other speech preparation issues.
I will be available before and after class to meet with students. If this is not convenient, please see me to make arrangements for another meeting time.

The Art of Public Speaking, Seventh Edition (with Student CD-ROM) by Stephen E. Lucas. (McGraw Hill, 2000) 

Other supplies that you may need:

A notebook and/or folder to keep handouts, and class notes
File folders to keep research information in
A Highlighter to mark up notes and copied source material
Microsoft Office (97 or 2000) or at least Word and PowerPoint. (There are also computers with this software available at the UC Campus)
3 ˝” Floppy disks (Double Sided, High Density, Box of 10) ($5-10/box)
100 MB Zip disk ($10-15 each) DO NOT buy the 250 MB Zip disks!

Course Description:

COMG110 - Effective Speaking

SATISFIES CORE REQUIREMENT

Designed to help students build confidence in preparing and delivering informative and persuasive speeches. Topics include subject selection, audience analysis, research, organization, and the use of voice and body in speech delivery. It is strongly recommended that students who enroll in this course have a writing score of 6 and a reading score of no less than 12.  3 credits 

Purpose of the Course (Learning Goals)

This course seeks to help students acquire the following:

  1. An understanding and appreciation of the personal, social, and political value of the art of public speaking.

  2. An understanding of the communication process.

  3. An understanding of the public speaker’s ethical responsibilities.

  4.  An understanding of the various patterns of informative and persuasive speech organization.

  5. Skill in preparing and delivering various types of speeches.

  6. Skill in analyzing an audience.

  7.  Skill in researching speech topics.

  8. Skill in preparing speech outlines.

  9. Skill in developing and supporting ideas.

  10. Skill in constructive self-criticism and constructive criticism of others’ speeches.

Evaluation (Grading):

Speech #1 10%
Speech #2. 20%
Speech #3 20%
Speech #4 40%
Class Participation and Homework 10%

Class Policies

All written work MUST BE TYPED and in the proper format.

There is no make-up for late speeches without valid reasons of absenceincluding hospitalization or death in the family.

Any graded speech not given constitutes a failure.

Students missing more than two (2) class meetings will receive a cut of one (1) letter grade in the course.

Repeated tardiness will be considered absence.

 Plagiarism will result in a grade of 0 (Zero points, or "F") for the assignment, which may not be submitted again. College policy on cheating and plagiarism will be followed strictly.

Course Schedule is subject to change without notice.

No incompletes will be given for this course.

 Use of beepers and cell phones is prohibited in class. All cell phone and beepers must be turned off during class. 

If you have a special situation, see the instructor for other arrangements.

This course requires a fair amount of research.  The college web page has many links to informational resources. All books can be brought up to Perkasie from the main campus library. 

 Library and Lab Computers:

The Upper County Campus has a Library Open Access computer area as well as two computer labs, which may be used when there are no classes in the room. Students are permitted to use these for web research, word processing, and PowerPoint Presentation creation.
