Understand the Rules of Transfer!

The key to a successful transfer is to plan early. The transfer process at Bucks is contingent upon the premise that you will select your courses wisely so that you are completing

  • core requirements - sometimes referred to as "general education" or "liberal arts" courses.
  • introductory courses in your major area of study.

Be mindful of the fact that just because a course will transfer to a four-year school, it doesn't necessarily mean that it is applicable to the degree program you are seeking. This is where planning and understanding the four-year school's requirements comes into play. By knowing the requirements of the school to which you are transferring, you can virtually guarantee that the college level courses you select at Bucks will transfer and mean something in terms of meeting requirements.

Following the guidelines below will help you maximize your credit transfer.

  1. Find a major!

You will need to decide on a major you would like to study at the four-year college. Use career web resources and self assessments to begin your exploration. Check out Bucks Career Services.

  2. Find a school that meets your needs!

    • Use the resources of Transfer Services:
      • college catalogs and view books
      • Peterson's Guide
      • The Transfer Data Book which provides information about transferring to individual colleges
      • The Transfer Fair program, which brings admissions representatives from four-year colleges to Bucks to talk with you about their programs, admissions requirements and the transfer of your courses
      • this web site to educate yourself about the transfer agreements that we have with various colleges and universities.
      • Transfer Services counselors by appointment (215-968-8031 or 215-968-8189)

    • Check out web sites:

Visit the following web sites for more information about schools, their majors, locations, etc.
    • Visit the schools under consideration

Don't just settle for a picturesque view book, web site, etc. Visit the school. Make sure it's a right fit for you and that you're a right fit for it. Talk with administrators, faculty, students and alumni if you have the opportunity. Get a feel for the place - you'll likely be spending two years there
  1. You've got the direction; you've got the school...keep planning!

    • Make sure that your Bucks major parallels the major at the four-year school. (Ex: If you want to be an accounting major at XYZ college, you should major in Business Administration - the business transfer major - at Bucks)

How do you go about ensuring that you are following the right major at Bucks? Consult your academic advisor, an advising specialist, a counselor or a transfer advisor. Any one of these professionals can assist you with this process.

    • Once you have decided on the college(s) to which you would like to transfer, consult the catalogs from these schools, the Bucks catalog and the Transfer Data Book as you choose your courses each semester.

This will help you choose the courses that will fulfill the requirements for the four-year school as well as meet the requirements for your degree at Bucks.
