American Institute of Floral Designers Partners with Bucks

‌Bucks becomes the only college in Pa. to offer a Floral Design Certificate Program that meets the high standards of the AIFD; Next class starts in July.

Bucks County Community College, whose Continuing Education Department provides professional certification and community programs, has been approved as an educational partner with the American Institute of Floral Designers, college officials announced.

“We are currently the only college in Pennsylvania offering this program,” said Dasha Marchetti, executive director of continuing education. “Students who complete our comprehensive floral design certificate program and pass the final evaluation now have a chance to become a Certified Floral Designer by taking AIFD’s online exam.”

Marchetti says all instructors in the college’s floral design program are AIFD certified, which is the highest level of floral design certification.

“We will now have visiting instructors from all over the country, teaching new and creative courses based on the newest trends and their worldly experiences,” Marchetti added.

Earning the certification will make graduates a top candidate to work for a florist, or give them the skills to open their own business, said Marchetti. “Whether you want to become an entrepreneur and launch your own floral shop, or work for a floral design company, this program will enhance that career path,” she noted.

As the program expands, students will be taking field trips to floral wholesalers and to programs like the Philadelphia Flower Show, with a goal of exhibiting at next year’s event, Marchetti said.

The Floral Design Certificate Program consists of five core courses, a capstone course, and three electives for a total of 102 instructional hours. Basic Floral Design, the first core course, will be offered at the Newtown campus from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. on five consecutive Monday evenings starting July 10. The cost is $385, which includes all floral materials and the program textbook, The AIFD Guide to Floral Design.

In addition, two electives will be offered this summer: Seasonal Arrangement: Summer from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursdays July 13 to August 3, and Modern Mechanics from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursdays August 8 to August 29.
