Music Faculty Brings ‘Pretty Melodies’ to Arts at Bucks Celebrations

The Jeff Baumeister Quartet, featuring four faculty members, presents a free concert Sat. April 19 to launch its latest CD .

The Music Area of Bucks County Community College’s Department of the Arts presents a CD release concert, “Pretty Melodies, for people who dig that sort of thing,” featuring the Jeff Baumeister Quartet at 8 p.m. Saturday, April 19.

The quartet is a modern jazz ensemble led by Philadelphia-born pianist and composer Jeff Baumeister, and features Lenny Pierro on saxophone, Paul Gehman on bass, and Mark Pultorak on drums. All members of the quartet are music faculty at Bucks County Community College.

The music on the CD, all original compositions by Baumeister, runs the gamut of styles from buoyant jazz waltzes, understated soul, deep grooves, and peaceful passages, and is capable of inspiring the musician and enthralling the novice alike.

“‘Pretty Melodies, for people who dig that sort of thing’ proves creativity and accessibility need not be seen as opposing forces,” wrote Dan Bilawsky in “All About Jazz.” Fellow jazz critic John Kelman wrote that the album “is an inspired follow-up recording to Baumeister's debut CD ‘Useful Music,’ demonstrating that music can be deep yet accessible, familiar while filled with surprise, and profound without feeling over-considered.”

The free concert takes place in the Gateway Auditorium on the campus at 275 Swamp Rd., Newtown, Pa., where there is ample free parking. It’s part of the annual Arts at Bucks celebrations April 16 to May 13, which showcases the variety of artistic opportunities and programs available at the two-year, public college.
