Ralph Alessi Baida Quartet Presents Free Concert at Newtown

Jazz group will also offer free master class to musicians Wed. March 12 prior to the performance.

Bucks County Community College presents the Ralph Alessi Baida Quartet Wednesday, March 12 at the Newtown campus.

The incredibly dynamic ensemble – described by The New York Times as “unstoppably inventive” – will present a free master class from 4:30 to 6 p.m., followed by a free concert from 7:30 to 9 p.m.

Led by San Francisco-born trumpeter/composer Ralph Alessi, the band will be releasing a new album, titled Baida, on the ECM record label. The Baida Quartet was first heard as a unit onAlessi’s 2002 CD This Against That, an album that made JazzTimes magazine’s Top 10for the year.

Alessi cut his teeth in the classical realm, learning from his classical musician father and performing with the San Francisco Symphony. Now a celebrated performer, composer and bandleader on the New York jazz scene, Alessi has led seven albums, including the recent duo release with pianist Fred Hersch. He’s performed extensively with Ravi Coltrane, Uri Caine, Don Byron and Steve Coleman.

The events take place in the Presser Music Room of the Music & Multimedia Center, located on the campus at 275 Swamp Rd., Newtown, Pa., 18940. Admission and parking are free.
