Start the New Year Fresh at Bucks with New Courses, Majors

Three new courses, new online classes and more await you at only $99 a credit for county residents; register now for Jan. start

Imagine using the silver screen to interpret American history. Or producing a newscast for the web. Or even exploring the impact of biology and genetics on human behavior and cognition.

You can do all of the above this spring at Bucks County Community College, which is offering three new courses on these topics starting in January. What’s more, nearly a dozen courses will be offered online for the first time, plus two new “hybrids” are available that mix online and face-to-face instruction.

Just when you thought history was about dates and ex-presidents, Bucks brings you Interpreting History through Cinema. This three-credit course relies on the uniqueness of film to explore, dissect and comprehend history. The class meets Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 9:30 on the Newtown campus.

Meanwhile, Webcast News Production is a workshop course on making an Internet newscast using digital video cameras and editing software. Students will conduct interviews, write scripts, shoot and edit digital video, and help produce a webcast. This three-credit course meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on the Newtown campus.

Finally, Neuroscience of Psychology is an introductory course that ties human behavior to genetics and biology. Topics include substance abuse, emotions, learning, memory, stress, and various psychological disorders. This three-credit class, which requires Introduction to Psychology as a prerequisite, meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on the Newtown campus.

In addition to three new courses, Bucks has added about a dozen courses to the nearly 200 offered online each semester. Courses taught in the eLearning format give highly motivated students the convenience of “class time on your time.” New offerings include Advanced Accounting, Fast Track Mathematics, Business Calculus, and Retailing and Merchandising.

Two courses are being offered in the hybrid format – which mixes eLearning and classroom meetings – for the first time. They are Introduction to Business and Principles of Marketing.

With campuses in Newtown, Bristol, and Perkasie, Bucks offers nearly 90 programs of study that lead to either a two-year associate degree or a shorter-term certificate. The most popular majors are business, education, nursing, and liberal arts. Credits can be applied toward a bachelor’s degree by transferring to a four-year school.

Registration for the spring semester, which begins January 20, is taking place now for current students. Former and returning students can register starting December 3. Advising and registration sessions for new students begin December 15. Bucks County residents pay only $99 a credit, plus fees, with financial aid and scholarships available.
