Ralph Alessi Baida Quartet

Event Information

The Ralph Alessi Baida Quartet is a band led by San Francisco-born
trumpeter/composer Ralph Alessi. An incredibly dynamic ensemble described by The
New York Times as “unstoppably inventive,” the band will be releasing a new record
(titled Baida) on the ECM Record Label. The Baida Quartet was first heard as a unit on
Alessi’s 2002 CD This Against That, an album that made JazzTimes magazine’s Top 10
for the year. Alessi cut his teeth in the classical realm, learning from his classical
musician father and performing with the San Francisco Symphony. Now a celebrated
performer, composer and bandleader on the New York jazz scene, he has led 7 albums
(including the recent duo release with pianist Fred Hersch) and performed extensively
with Ravi Coltrane, Uri Caine, Don Byron and Steve Coleman. Pianist Gary Versace
has quickly become one of the busiest and most versatile musicians on the New York
Scene often featured in bands led by Johh Scofield, John Hollenbeck, Ingrid Jensen
and Maria Schneider. In 1999 Versace appeared on Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz
show on NPR. Mcpartland has called Versace "...endlessly inventive" and …"an
extraordinary talent". Bassist Drew Gress is a virtuoso and one of New York’s most
accomplished improvisors, leading a number of bands and lending his talents to
boundary-breaking artists including Tim Berne, John Abercrombie, Steve Lehman and
Marc Copland. Drummer Nasheet Waits is the son of jazz drumming luminary Freddie
Waits and is a longstanding member of Jason Moran’s quartet, The Bandwagon. He is
an in-demand sideman and had long-term associations with Max Roach’s percussion
ensemble M’BOOM, pianist Andrew Hill and saxophonist Antonio Hart.
