Writing Our Cultural Traditions

Do you like to tell the stories your grandparents told you about the Old Country? Do you want your children and grandchildren to know what the Fourth of July parade was like when you were a child? In the 21st century, America has become a mosaic of beautiful cultural traditions. Whether your ancestors were from Europe, Asia, Africa or Native American, or even if they were from another part of the U.S., who they were is an important part of your own story. Using simple in-class exercises, we will practice writing techniques to record our family and personal stories. We will read and discuss poetry and memoirs from different ethnic groups.

The Aeneid

This will be a close reading of Virgil's classic epic, The Aeneid, in the acclaimed new translation by Robert Fagles. The spirit and vitality of Virgil's Latin is captured in very readable contemporary English. If your only acquaintance with The Aeneid was in Latin class or in an earlier and more turgid translation, you will gain a new appreciation for Virgil's talent and his enormous skill as a storyteller. Dip into the birth pains of the Roman Empire as Virgil builds his own heroic epic from Homeric tradition, beginning with the battle at Troy.
