F-1 Student Responsibilities
- Every F-1 student must take a minimum of 12 CREDITS PER SPRING AND FALL SEMESTERS. The ICE
(Immigration and Customs Enforcement, formerly INS) stresses that this requirement is the student's
responsibility. Should a student not register for 12 credits or withdraw from classes within the semester,
the student alone would be held in violation of the visa and subject to expulsion from the United
States. Classes are not required to be taken in the summer.
- I-20/VISA EXTENSIONS WILL NOT BE GRANTED BECAUSE OF POOR GRADES. Along with maintaining a
course load of 12 credits, F-1 students are expected to have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or greater in
order to finish their degree before the expiration of their I-20. The I-20 does allow extra time for the
student to take prerequisite courses; however, if a student does not pass a course, the student should
re-take that course during the summer months when possible to avoid failing to graduate within the
prescribed time.
- F-1 STUDENTS ARE RESTRICTED FROM WORKING OFF-CAMPUS. F-1 students can work at specified
on-campus locations for a maximum of 20 hours per week during each semester and 40 hours per
week during the summer.
- ALL NON-U.S. CITIZENS MUST NOTIFY IMMIGRATION & CUSTOMS ENFORCEMENT OF ANY ADDRESS CHANGE.
This must be done within 10 days of the move by submitting form AR-11.
- Every F-1 student must have MEDICAL COVERAGE WHICH INCLUDES MEDICAL EVACUATION AND
REPATRIATION (100% cost coverage to transport a seriously ill student to his/her home).
