Social workers as well as other human services professionals and paraprofessionals often have the responsibility of making home visits to their clients. The purpose of these visits can range from information sharing/ assessment/ eligibility for services to mental health/substance abuse outreach/intervention to investigating abuse or neglect. Neighborhoods may be unfamiliar and sometimes dangerous. Information on the client or situation may be incomplete. Workers may be met with fear and suspicion. To minimize risk, it is crucial that the worker prepare and learn techniques for engaging and disengaging in the home visit.
