Getting Started With This Course


Orientation(s)

Orientation for this course is REQUIRED.
Failure to participate in a REQUIRED orientation, as specified below, may jeopardize your grade.

Online

Your instructor will hold the orientation online using self-paced tools, email and/or discussions. (A self-paced orientation does NOT mean the entire course is self-paced.) You should plan to access your online course no later than the first day of the session. Failure to do so may jeopardize your grade.


Other Orientation Information
Students should orient to the course by reviewing the Course Format, Course Schedule and course site at the start of the semester. All students are required to document their understanding of the course requirements by taking a graded quiz during the first few days of the semester. A virtual chat session will also be available during the first week for orientation purposes, as well.

Accessing Your Course

Canvas (by Instructure)

Your course is using Canvas. If you are new to Canvas, please visit the Canvas Basics course space to become familiar with Canvas prior to the start of your course. No login is required to access this space.

You will be able to login to Canvas about two weeks prior to the start of your class. However, your course becomes available as of 1 AM on the official course start date.

Logging In

Log in to your Canvas course space at bucks.instructure.com

  • Username: Your username is the same for every system at Bucks.
  • Password: your Bucks Network password (used to log into any Bucks campus computer or to access any Bucks Library online database from off campus.)

If you do not know your Bucks Username, go to WebAdvisor. Select Account information (upper right hand corner of the screen) then select What's My User ID? and follow the prompts. You will need to provide your last name AND either your 7 digit student ID number OR your social security #. Your Bucks username will display on the screen.

Note: Students are uploaded to Canvas several times a day. If you registered late, you won't be able to access Canvas until the next upload takes place.


MyNutritionLab

Your course is using MyNutritionLab, which requires the purchase of an access code. This code is usually packaged with a new textbook, but may also be purchased separately from the MyNutritionLab website if it is not included with your book.

Your instructor will provide an additional course code you will need to access your specific course.

Other Information about the Course

Thank you for your interest in Nutrition - HLTH 120N. I hope that you will benefit from the many experiences you will have to explore the science of nutrition. Please note that this course is an e-learning course. ALL aspects of the course (assignments, examinations, and postings) are completed online through the Bucks County Community Collge coursespace.

In our class, we will explore the science of nutrition. The course will encourage the application of nutrition principles and enable you to implement good nutrition in your own life.

Orientation: Orientation is completed by accessing the course site at the start of the semester. Students will need to review the Course Format and Course Schedule. Students will be quizzed on the Course Format in order to show their understanding of course requirements. A virtual chat session orienting you to the course will also be available during the first week.

This course uses a course management system called Canvas. It is recommended that students take the online Student Orientation. Additionaly, students are encouraged to visit the Technology Learning Center for assistance in understanding how to participate in e-learning courses. All of the recommended components contain information that you will need in order to decide if your computer meets the minimal requirements for accessing the course.

Communication: The course is designed so that you, the student, can benefit from various methods of communication with the instructor and your fellow students. This means that you will be required to utilize the numerous internet methods to communicate, send assignments, take tests and quizzes, and perform your own research. Remember, your success in this class will be directly linked to your utilization of the various tools and learning activities available to you.

Course Requirements: Some things that will be required for your effective participation in this course are the following items:

Access to a Computer with Internet Access. Active participation in on-line discussions. Timely completion of required examinations and class assignments. No late assignments will be accepted; all coursework is submitted through the online course space.
