The required text for this course is :The Art of Public Speaking by Stephen Lucas, 11th edition. Make sure you have the 11th edition at the beginning of the semester. The 11th edition has some major changes from previous editions and you will not be able to get the proper material in an earlier edition.
During the semester, you will have to deliver and record 4 speeches. In order to participate in this class, you will need the equipment necessary to video-record your speeches and upload them to Canvas.
During the first week, you will do a video test assignment to familiarize yourself with the process of recording yourself and submitting the video to Canvas.
If you need access to a digital video camera, you may be able to check one out from the BCCC library. MInDSpace personnel are a great resource if you need help uploading your video to Canvas. Solve any video problems that you may have in the first week of the semester, before the Speech Assignments are due, because a lack of familiarity or ability to record and upload videos will not be a valid excuse for late or missing work.
For your speeches, you will need to have 5 adult audience members, clearly shown in the video, to whom you are performing your speeches. This is a public speaking class and as such having a live audience is essential. While this course can be fully completed off-campus, you will still need to interact with other people (an audience) in order to pass the class. These speeches should be performed in a quiet space that will allow you to perform you speech free of interruptions or distraction.
Learning online is a challenging undertaking. In many ways, it is a lot more work than a traditional face-to-face course. You must be self-motivated and complete all of the assignments. Late assignments will not be accepted without prior approval from the instructor and appropriate documentation. If you start missing assignments, it will be very difficult for you to pass this course. In an online course, your class participation is demonstrated by your timely completion of assignments and your participation in our online discussion forums.
I have no doubt that if you follow the instructions and let me know when you need help, you will have a productive and enjoyable online learning experience. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
