Getting Started With This Course

Orientation for this course is REQUIRED.
Failure to participate in a REQUIRED orientation, as specified below, may jeopardize your grade.

Your instructor will hold the orientation online using self-paced tools, email and/or discussions. (A self-paced orientation does NOT mean the entire course is self-paced.) You should plan to access your online course no later than the first day of the session. Failure to do so may jeopardize your grade.

There will be orientation information posted on our Canvas site to familiarize you with the objectives and requirements of this course. We will go over the course syllabus and format in the classroom on the first day.

Accessing Your Course

Canvas (by Instructure)

Your course is using Canvas. If you are new to Canvas, please visit the Canvas Basics course space to become familiar with Canvas prior to the start of your course. No login is required to access this space.

You will be able to login to Canvas about two weeks prior to the start of your class. However, your course becomes available as of 1 AM on the official course start date.

Logging In

Log in to your Canvas course space at bucks.instructure.com

  • Username: Your username is the same for every system at Bucks.
  • Password: your Bucks Network password (used to log into any Bucks campus computer or to access any Bucks Library online database from off campus.)

If you do not know your Bucks Username, go to WebAdvisor. Select Account information (upper right hand corner of the screen) then select What's My User ID? and follow the prompts. You will need to provide your last name AND either your 7 digit student ID number OR your social security #. Your Bucks username will display on the screen.

Note: Students are uploaded to Canvas several times a day. If you registered late, you won't be able to access Canvas until the next upload takes place.

Other Information about the Course

Welcome to Peoples of America!

In this course, students explore the diversity of people living in the United States. We will discuss the collective experiences of various groups and we will examine the intersections of race/ethnicity, social class, gender, religion, dis/ability and sexual orientation. There will be a focus on structural inequality and the effect it has on individual choices and behaviors. Note: This course transfers to Temple as American Ethnicity R064. This fulfills the Race &Diversity requirement for Temple.

There are many advantages to taking hybrid courses. You have the structure of meeting regularly in the classroom, but some flexibility of doing some work online.

We will meet every Monday and Wednesday for the entire semester. Your classroom attendance is required. Instead of meeting on Fridays, you will spend time participating online. We will talk more about this when we meet on the first day of class.

You will need to have access to a computer to participate in the on-line discussion questions and to submit assignments.

We will be utilizing several features of Canvas, but most frequently the "Discussion" tool and the "Quizzes" link, the "Assignments" link in our course space. Please log into Canvas and review the Student Orientation and Student Materials which are available to students before the start of the semester.
