Testing in the Distance Learning Environment
rule

Some of the most frequently asked questions, by both students and faculty, have to do with testing. Students usually wonder if they have to go somewhere to take a test or if they can simply take it at home. Faculty are usually concerned with making sure the right student is taking the right test.

Testing Formats
Tests are offered in one of two formats:

  • the traditional paper & pencil method.
  • the newer online means.

The same type of questions that are present in a paper & pencil test, i.e. multiple choice, true/false, multiple response, essay, and matching, can also be present in an online test. Each instructor determines the testing format that will be used.

Proctored Testing
A number of distance learning instructors require that students take their tests in a secure, monitored environment. Tests can be proctored whether the test format is online or paper & pencil.

  • The college provides proctoring services at no cost and they are conveniently available at our Newtown, Bristol Center, and Upper County Campuses.
  • Students may propose a person to act as a proctor for them, if the student is unable to travel to one of BCCC's campuses. The proctor must agree to receive the tests from the instructor, administer them in an approved environment and return them to the instructor. Instructors have the option to accept or reject the proposed proctor. Any fees involved are the student's responsibility. Examples of individuals who may be eligible to serve as proctors are listed on the Distance Learning website.

Often times, instructors will want the mid-term and final exam for their course proctored, while quizzes and smaller unit tests are not.

Details regarding proctored testing - times, locations, proctor proposal forms - are available from the Distance Learning website.

Testing Dates & Times
Just as in a face-to-face class where tests are taken on a certain day and within a certain amount of time, i.e. the class period, the same can be true for tests in a Distance Learning course.

  • Many instructors will set schedules for when you must take your tests by.
  • Many instructors will set time limits on how long you have to take tests.

This can be true whether the tests are proctored or self-administered.
