This information is for any student with a disability who may need academic adjustments such as testing alternatives, note taking assistance, computer adaptations, interpreters, tutoring, library assistance, priority registration and access to readers. We hope this information will help explain who is eligible for accommodations and how to request them, as well as the responsibility that belongs to the student, the instructor and to the staff of this Office.

WHO MAY BE ELIGIBLE FOR ACADEMIC ADJUSTMENTS

Any student who has a disability that affects his or her functioning as a student may be eligible for academic adjustments. Disability services staff will request and review any documentation required to support or identify the need for adjustments.

HOW TO REQUEST ACADEMIC ADJUSTMENTS

  1. Students should contact Marie Stevens Cooper, Disability Services Coordinator, or Marge Zipin, Learning Disability Specialist, in Disability Services (DS) with any questions about this process.

  2. EACH SEMESTER students who are eligible must complete a "Request for Academic Adjustments" and return it to DS.

  3. Request should be made at least two weeks before the semester begins. Later requests will be handled as they are received.

  4. If the requests are approved, DS will provide students with memos for instructors stating the academic adjustments to be permitted in class.

  5. Students should meet with their instructor during the first week or two of class to discuss how the adjustments will be made.

THE STUDENT'S RESPONSIBILITY

In order to receive services, students are responsible for identifying their needs to DS as early as possible. Later identification may still enable a student to be eligible but may delay the period of time it takes to receive services. It is wise to remind instructors of adjustment needs, such as extra time needed for tests, during the semester in case they forget.

WHAT IS THE INSTRUCTORS RESPONSIBILITY

Instructors are responsible for working with the student and our office to put reasonable accommodations into place. Students should contact our office, however, if an instructor will not allow the approved accommodations to be put in place. They are not responsible for making accommodations for students who do not identify their needs in advance or who do not provide them with a memo from our office.

WHAT IS RESPONSIBILITY OF THE OFFICE FOR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES

This office exists to make sure that students are given reasonable accommodations when needed. We will prepare accommodation letters, send them to the student, and discuss how to use accommodations with the student and instructor if requested. We will not discuss a student with an instructor unless we have the student's permission.
