Dante’s Inferno

Dante's Inferno has left audiences fascinated and shuddering for over 700 years. Join us for a fresh look both at the poet Dante Aligheri and the world he lived in. We will briefly examine the political and economic history of 13th Century Florence as well as the forces which influenced Dante’s work. Visuals will be used throughout the course to examine not only the literary interpretation of Inferno, but the artistic as well. We will conclude by tying Dante’s Inferno into his larger Divine Comedy, exploring the work’s influence on Italian language and culture, and discussing the work’s place in Western literature.
