Discover the traditional “Four Treasures” of Shodo, the Japanese art of Calligraphy. As you learn to prepare your own inks, practice the use of the writing brush and the execution of individual strokes, and master the construction of characters, you will steep yourself in the history and beauty of this ancient art form. By the end of the session you will have developed a familiarity with writing characters in both the standard and semi-cursive styles. Knowledge of the Japanese language is not necessary to study this art form. A materials list will be mailed prior to the first class.

Great gifts for the holidays!Just like those seen at fine craft shows and gift shops, you will learn to cut glass and design a beautiful ornament to hang on a tree or in a window. Using colored glass pieces, glass dots, glass frit, glass noodles and dichroic glass, students will create a unique and colorful design. The instructor will fire the projects in a kiln to fuse all the pieces together, and have them ready for you in approximately two weeks. Students are invited to make as many as they'd like at a fee of $13 each.

The artist Cecilia Beaux was advised by seascape
artist Alexander Harrison to take up plein air
painting….to help her portrait and figure painting.
The idea was to quickly render the subject before
the subject moved or the environment changed.
Thus, the idea of premier coup, a painting that is
completed in one sitting without touch-up. You will
learn the necessary techniques to complete a
painting in a short time period from a still life or a
live model. Emphasis will be on quick
interpretation, color, technique, and composition.

The course will introduce students to non traditional painting methods beyond the brush, and explore the variety of marks and surfaces artists can achieve with squeegees, rollers, tapes, maskings and other tools. We will explore ways in which a painting’s surface can become either glossy, waxy or muted by sanding, buffing, scumbling and glazing.
