This program is designed to prepare students to use the Microsoft Office software package with confidence, including Word Processing (Word), spreadsheets (Excel), database (Access), visual presentation (PowerPoint), and Internet/calendar (Outlook), and to use these programs in an integrated environment. Completers of this certificate program will find employment as administrative assistants, word processing specialists, database managers, and office managers.
A planned sequence of courses is illustrated in the recommended semester sequence listing. This sequence is designed to provide incremental skill development from semester to semester that will enable students to progress toward the achievement of the stated objectives of the program and to have the skills necessary for entry level positions using the Microsoft Office software package in an integrated environment. In addition to the ability of the diligent student to challenge Microsoft competency tests, the minimum competencies learners would acquire in this 18 credit-hour program include:
- create varied business documents skillfully employing the most efficient means.
- prepare and modify spreadsheets under varied conditions using standard program functions.
- develop and manipulate a database as well as retrieve selected information.
- create visual presentations that include such varied features as agendas, charts, diagrams, and clip art using a variety of formats and styles.
- prepare, send and receive e-mail and fax messages.
- transfer information among various software programs such as by merging a spreadsheet with a word-processed report containing newspaper-like columns.
